In the relentless pursuit of productivity and success, we often hear about the importance of focus. High performers are praised for their laser-like concentration, their ability to tune out distractions, and their capacity to give 110% to every task at hand. While focus is undoubtedly important, there is a lesser-known but equally powerful tool that every great leader and high performer must master: curated interruptions.

Before you dismiss this idea, let’s clarify something important: There’s a marked difference between distraction and interruption. Distractions are the enemy of focus. They steal time, scatter attention, and prevent us from achieving our goals. They are the endless stream of notifications, the siren call of social media, or the tempting “quick breaks” that eat away at your productivity. Distractions derail momentum.

Interruptions, on the other hand, are different. They are disturbances, yes, but they can also be purposeful, powerful, and transformative. When used intentionally, interruptions can spark innovation, shift perspective, and reveal insights that hyperfocus alone might obscure.

Why Leaders Need Curated Interruptions

Leaders and high performers tend to be hyper-focused. This focus may have opened doors and created opportunities for them. But as Hippocrates wisely said, “Everything in excess is opposed to nature.” Too much focus can lead to confirmation bias, rigid thinking, and missed opportunities. When you’re too close to a problem, it’s easy to miss the obvious solution staring you in the face.

Enter curated interruptions: the art of intentionally stepping back, pausing, and creating a break in your thought process. Curated interruptions allow you to shift perspective, see things from a new angle, and challenge the status quo of your own assumptions. They are the deliberate antidote to stagnation and the gateway to innovation.

The Science Behind Curated Interruptions

The concept of metacognition — or “thinking about your thinking” — is foundational here. Metacognition encourages you to observe your own thought patterns, question your assumptions, and, when necessary, interrupt yourself to think differently. I love the idea of metacognition because it highlights our ability to pause and change direction when our thinking becomes stagnant.

Think about it… Have you ever had a breakthrough idea while on a walk, taking a shower, or chatting with someone outside your usual circle? These moments of “stepping away” are curated interruptions in action. They give your mind a chance to breathe, reset, and generate fresh ideas.

How to Curate Your Own Interruptions

Curated interruptions aren’t about chaotic, random breaks. They’re purposeful disruptions designed to spark new ways of thinking. Here are some examples to help you break free from mental ruts and open up new possibilities:

  1. Meet New People in New Places (or the Same People in New Places) Engaging with different people — or simply interacting in a different setting — can expose you to new perspectives and ideas. The environment and company you keep shape your thinking more than you realize.
  2. Read Different Books (Not Just More Books) If you’re a business book junkie, try diving into fiction, history, or philosophy. Exploring new genres broadens your mental framework and inspires new ways of approaching challenges.
  3. Explore World Religions and Cultures Learning about different worldviews and beliefs opens your mind to alternative ways of thinking and problem-solving. This cultural empathy can be a game-changer in leadership.
  4. Break Long-Standing Routines Routine can be both a comfort and a cage. Try switching up your travel routes, food choices, clothing preferences, or even your music playlist. These small changes can have a surprisingly big impact on your thinking.
  5. Start a New (or Revisit an Old) Hobby Creative pursuits and hobbies engage different parts of your brain, fostering creativity and providing a mental break from your usual work.
  6. Get Lost Somewhere New on Purpose Traveling somewhere unfamiliar — physically or mentally — forces you to adapt and think differently. Embrace the discomfort of the unknown; it’s a fertile ground for growth.

Interruptions vs. Disruptions

It’s important to note that curated interruptions are not the same as disruptions. Disruptions are often chaotic, externally imposed, and tend to offer little value in the moment. Curated interruptions, on the other hand, are intentional and strategic. They’re about creating space to think differently and break free from cognitive ruts.

Putting Curated Interruptions into Practice

Curated interruptions are a powerful tool for innovation and growth, but they require a willingness to step back from the grind. High performers often resist this idea, fearing that “stepping away” will cost them productivity. Ironically, it’s precisely these interruptions that can lead to breakthroughs, greater creativity, and better solutions.

Here’s how to get started:

  • Schedule Interruptions: Dedicate time each week to step away from your usual routine and engage in a curated interruption. Treat it like any other important meeting.
  • Be Intentional: Know why you’re taking a break and what you hope to gain from it. Curated interruptions work best when they’re driven by curiosity and a desire to see things differently.
  • Reflect and Apply: After each interruption, take time to reflect on what you learned or how your perspective shifted. Look for ways to apply these insights to your work or personal life.

Lead with Curated Interruptions

The ability to intentionally interrupt yourself — to shift your thinking, break free from patterns, and see the world anew — is one of the most powerful leadership skills you can cultivate. High performers don’t just push harder; they also step back, reflect, and curate moments of change.

Are you ready to challenge your assumptions, innovate with intention, and become a more effective leader? Let’s work together to build a leadership approach grounded in the power of curated interruptions. When you’re ready to elevate your thinking and lead with impact, I’m here to guide you on the journey. The path to innovation and growth begins with a single step…or a purposeful pause.
